Expert Workshop in NLI, June 2015. Dr. Liz Rushen 19C Irish Women to Australia.

Outline:

Thousands of Irish girls migrated to Australia in the 1830s, a decade before the Great Famine. What was it like to migrate to the far ends of the known world at this time? How did they survive the rigours of the voyage? Did they ‘swing swang’ in hammocks or have to fight for every morsel to eat? What sort of reception did they receive? Listen to Dr Liz Rushen talk about these adventurous Irish women and their migration experience in 1830′s.
